How to select a fire damper: an engineer's guide
Breaking down the key parameters for selecting fire dampers: type, activation temperature, fire resistance, actuator, certification.
Fire damper is one of the key elements of a building's fire safety system. Human lives and property preservation depend on proper selection. This article examines the main parameters to consider when selecting.
1. Valve Type
• Normally Open (NO) — installed on standard ventilation systems, closes in case of fire. Activation temperature 70°C.
• Normally Closed (NC) — installed on smoke extraction systems, opens in case of fire to remove smoke. Activation temperature 280°C (overheat protection).2. Fire resistance
Main classes according to EN 1366-2:
• EI 30 — 30 minutes
• EI 60 — 60 minutes (most common for business centers and shopping malls)
• EI 90 — 90 minutes (for high-rise buildings and underground structures)
• E 600 — withstands 600°C for 60 minutes (for smoke extraction systems)3. Actuator
• Manual — for budget solutions where automation is not required
• Electromagnetic — triggers on fire alarm signal, power supply 24V
• Electric reversing — for smoke exhaust systems, power supply 230V/24V
• Spring return — fail-safe closing upon power loss4. Tightness (Leakage)
Tightness classes according to EN 1751:
• Class 1 — maximum tightness (leakage<10 м³/(ч·м²) при 500 Па)
• Class 2 — средняя
• Class 3 — стандартнаяFor air conditioning systems, we recommend Class 1-2; for general ventilation, Class 3.
5. Certification
For EAEU countries (Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Russia), the following are mandatory:
• EAC certificate TR CU 004/2011 (safety of machinery and equipment)
• EAC certificate TR CU 020/2011 (electromagnetic compatibility)
For Europe — CE declaration EN 1366-2, EN 1506.6. Dimensions
Standard sizes — from 100×100 to 2000×2000 mm. For non-standard sizes, manufacturing per customer drawings is possible (lead time +5-7 days).Conclusion
